This is on the 26th, I believe.
does anyone else think it's a bad plan to have the bike lane BETWEEN traffic and where cars park? Seems like a meat-grinder to me...
Depends a lot on the width of the bike lane, and the amount of room available for parking...and of course, on the knowledge of the bicyclist.
how much width and knowledge you have, you'll still by flying over somebody's trunk when they abruptly stop to pull in, or pull out right in front of you because they simply can't see you running along (and between) a line of suv's.... just seems like a bad plan.
Why not put the lanes in keeping w/ the size/danger of the entity traveling? Ie., cars, bikes, pedestrians... Car traffic lanes, then car parking, THEN bike lanes (w/ room for car doors), then peds. Easier for peds to see/ cross bikes than cars to see anything... and if a collision does occur, less likely fatal. Just a thought.
... inside the parking lanes is even worse than having them between the parking lane and the car lanes. What happens when you need to make a left hand turn? You have to go through the parking lane somehow, into the traffic lanes and into the left hand turn lane ...
Door zones are a problem, agreed. The only solutions I really see are 1) don't allow parking, or 2) make the bike lane wide enough to allow cyclists to ride outside of the door zone (or add a `door zone' that's not part of the bike lane, where you don't park and don't ride.)
