Chris just notified me of this entertaining incident that occurred yesterday morning and was just published in the most-recent edition of the UT Campus watch:

200 BLOCK EAST 21st STREET

Evading Arrest or Detention / Disregard a Stop Sign: A UT police officer observed a UT student fail to stop a stop sign while riding a bicycle. The officer ordered the subject to stop several times. The student turned to see the officer giving chase. The student continued to peddle north, only this time with a little more urgency. The officer stopped the student and learned that the student needed to turn in a lab report before it was deemed late. The officer issued the subject a field release citation for Disregarding the Stop Sign and chose not to take the subject into custody for Evading but referred the student to the Dean of Student’s Office. Occurred on: 4-01-09, at 10:00 AM.

Crime Prevention Tip: This officer showed a lot of discretion in this case. A bicycle is considered a vehicle in the State of Texas. Since it is a motor vehicle all bicyclists are required to obey the same traffic laws as if they were driving a motorized vehicle. Chapter 13 of the Texas Department of Public Safety driver’s handbook spells out the responsibilities of a bicyclist. When it comes to the safety and welfare of the students, staff and faculty at the University of Texas, getting a late lab report turned in is not worth going to jail for.

Watch the stop sign running while on UT property folks, it looks like they're SERIOUS BUSINESS about that shit. Thanks for the tip, Chris!

they've always been serious about all violations (stop sign running and sidewalk riding basically), but they don't show up on campus every day. it's usually one cop and this year there is a new guy who is power happy.

one day, he was at a busy intersection spinning in circles ambitiously trying to prevent pedestrians from walking illegally across the intersections where the mass clearly overwhelmed any other type of traffic from crossing. he was not there the next day nor any day since.

he is also very anal about riding on the sidewalk.. i rode my bike 5 ft on the sidewalk (no pedestrians near) to the bike rack and he chased me down for that..

just gotta keep a very sharp eye out for em.

really, pedestrians cause most of the traffic trouble--not bikes. most of them don't even look as they cross the street at non-crosswalks. many times, had i been a car, they would have been hit due to close calls on my bike.
